Bowmanville Horticultural Society
“Bowmanville Horticultural Society meets the third Wednesday of every month (except July, August and December) at Trinity United Church, 116 Church Street, Bowmanville. The Society held its first inaugural meeting in 1966 and we currently have a very active membership. The Society plants and maintains six gardens at the Clarington Tourism Site. As well, we do seasonal plantings at the Clarington Municipal Office, Library and downtown Bowmanville. The Bowmanville Horticultural Society is a chartered member of the Ontario Horticultural Assocation. New members are always welcome. Please join us!” (— as printed in Bowmanville, Up Close, Vol. 1 Issue 1, May 2008)
Oshawa Garden Club
“The Oshawa Garden Club was originally formed in 1910 by a group of people who were interested in horticulture. It flourished for a number of years and then disbanded, re-formed and disbanded again. It has been going continuously since February 1931. It began as the Oshawa Horticultural Society but changed its name in 1974 to the Oshawa Garden Club.
The purpose was originally to promote interest in horticulture. This was demonstrated in 1922 in an article in the Oshawa Daily Times (formerly the Oshawa Reformer) reporting that the Board of Education and Home and School Clubs were joining with the Oshawa Horticultural Society’s President Fred Carswell “to commence this year’s activities…working in co-operation with a view to making the grounds surrounding the schools as attractive as possible, and also to educate children as well as older persons how to care for bulbs and later flowers, that will add to the appearance of the school”.” (— as described on the Oshawa Garden Club’s website, May 2008)
The Oshawa Garden Club meets Monday nights monthly throughout the year, except for July and August. Please visit their website for details.
