The Forest Trees of Ontario

Last week Graham and I were at the St. Vincent de Paul thrift store here in town. He was looking for a winter jacket and I was scanning the shelves of children’s books looking for something Nate would like to read. I came across this fantastic little 1968 paperback book called The Forest Trees of Ontario.

It’s a very simple little book with black and white illustrations of the leaves, needles, buds, twigs and cones of many trees that you can find here in Ontario.

This book would have come in very handy during the Master Gardeners Technical Update I went to earlier this month. The illustrations of the twigs at the back of the book would have been the most useful for the exercise we did, which was to identify trees by their winter twigs and buds.

Even though this book is 45 years old, it is still an excellent addition to my gardening library, and only cost me a quarter!
