Tomato cages: They’re not just for tomatoes!

by Amy on September 23, 2009

One of the things I love most about gardening is the fact that gardeners are creative folks, and when they come up with ideas for improving their gardens, they like to share those ideas with others who grow plants.  On September 12 I attended the Bowmanville Fall Glory Garden Tour with my good friend Sarah and I wanted to share some of the cool things I saw on the tour.  Today’s post features just one of those ideas.

I missed having zinnias in my garden this year.  They are one of my favourite flowers for cutting.  These were almost as tall as I am and were planted in a large, long clump in the middle of a traditional vegetable garden.  The gardener had used tomato cages to support their height, which I thought was a fabulous idea.  I don’t think I give the tomato cage the credit it’s due.  I don’t like using them for supporting tomatoes, oddly enough, but they’re great for tall perennials or those with the tendency to flop later in the season.

More gardening ideas gleaned on the tour to follow!

I LOVE this idea! Especially since this year's garden produced less than a handful of usable tomatoes. The weather was just too damp. If there had been some flowers in the midst of the veggies, it would have so much less depressing!

I thought that our tomato harvest was going to be a big disappointment this year, too. In a way it was, but we still have a lot to give away to friends.

I love to plant flowers among the veggies!
