This Weekend’s List of Gardening Chores

August 1, 2009

Woo boy, what with being away for most of last week and the weather being unseasonably cool and just plain unpleasant lately, the back yard has become a real chore to contend with. Normally I don’t refer to gardening as a “chore,” but there are enough tasks that have to be done outside that I’ve made a list. When weekend work belongs in a list, then that list becomes known officially as a Chore List.

I’m not going to fool myself into thinking that everything on this list will be accomplished this long weekend, but if I can make a bit of a dent in the list, then that will be enough to make me happy.

  • Cut back spent perennial flowers in the front and back yard
  • Weed the vegetable garden
  • Finish edging the perennial garden
  • Weed the perennial beds
  • Replant perennials that were recently dug up
  • Harvest catnip (before it goes to seed and takes over the entire yard!)
  • Move raspberries
  • Sow mid-season seeds
  • Prune the dogwood (Yep, I added this item to the list JUST so I could cross it off!)

See? There’s no way all of that is getting done this weekend. But I’ll put on a hat, some sunscreen, stay hydrated, grab my iPod and a little Jack Johnson (my current favourite gardening music), and do what I can. I think I’ll start with the cutting back of the spent perennials.  That will make a big difference pretty quickly.

Oh, and I’ll take frequent breaks when it becomes too tiring to lug this growing baby belly around the yard!

Most work in the garden I would classify as chores. But no chore goes unrewarded, and nowhere is that more so than in the garden. Be it just the visual pleasure of a bunch of flowers, or the taste of a freshly pulled tomato, the end justifies the means.

That looks just like my list. But it’s raining here, and we have another severe thunderstorm warning, so I’ll stay contentedly inside and sew, and deal with the list later. I like to break my list down into smaller tasks, so when I highlight the finished ones, it seems I got sooooo much done.

@Garden Gopher what a lovely comment, and I agree, you are totally right. I brought some cut flowers into the house yesterday and they add such joy to the rooms of our house!

@Sigrun doesn’t it feel GREAT to cross items off a to-do list?
