What’s blooming this week? (Late bloomers edition.)

July 28, 2009
By Amy

I called this post the Late bloomers edition because these are really photos of what was blooming in my garden last week.  These photos sat on my camera while I was away in Chicago.  So, without further ado, I give you last week’s bloomers here in my southern Ontario garden.

Lacy white yarrow (Achillea), great for cutting.

Yarrow

My friend Genny sent me some seeds for these poppies a few years ago. They have popped up in various placed in the garden ever since!  I think they look like carnations.

Ruffled pink poppies.

“Baja Red” daylily.

Anisse-Hyssop. I’d better get out and deadhead these before it goes to seed and spreads even further! This plant is self-sows like crazy. The bees love it.

What a pretty variety of plants. I’ve never seen white yarrow, nor those pretty poppies that do, indeed, look like carnations! You’ve taken some beautiful photographs. :-)

@Shady Gardener, I think yarrow is one of the unsung heroes of the garden. It blooms for quite awhile and I love its lacy foliage. A definite old-fashioned favourite of mine.

Gorgeous! The poppies – in case you or some readers don’t know – are called Peony poppies. I had some last year in an amazing salmon colour, but they didn’t come back, alas. Must buy me some more!!!
The daylilies are also astonishing. Nice what a bit of red does to suddenly make them extraordinary and not like the run-of-the-mill orange ones.

p.s. Save some of the poppy seeds if you can – they’re lovely in baked goods or on top of homemade breads! (peony poppies = papaver somniferum = opium – slash – breadseed poppy) ;-)
