What’s blooming this week?

by Amy on July 3, 2009

My “What’s blooming?” posts are creating a fantastic record of my garden this year.  It’s good to see that I have, in fact, accomplished my goal of having flowers in bloom throughout the season.  Planting perennials that flower at various points in the spring, summer and right into the fall has made my garden really pop!

So what’s blooming this week in my Southern Ontario perennial garden?

This unknown variety of speedwell is only about 8 inches to the top of the tallest bloom, and the flower spikes are such a pretty shade of purple.

I love the classic delphiniums and their really tall, striking, almost blue flowers, but I don’t have any of those in my garden. These shorter, pink delphiniums are the variety that I grow. Their foliage is a lime green.

Fuzzy-headed coreopsis is beginning to spread. Its bright yellow blooms are becoming an old stand-by in our garden.

There seem to be nearly hundreds of varieties of campanula out there, and this one is one of the most attractive in bloom. The downside to this variety, Campanula punctata, “Bowl of Cherries” is that it is a very aggressive spreader by seed. I’ve pulled out all kinds of this from the garden in a few places and it always comes back.

I call these cherry bells.

Last this week, but certainly not the least, is this Kniphofia plant. Its common name is “Torchlily”, and it’s no wonder!  I bought it two summers ago for a steal and this year it’s beginning to show its potential. The orange and yellow flower spikes almost glow in the perennial border, whether the sun is shining brightly or it’s dreary and drizzly.

What’s blooming in your region these days?
