Planning a Spring Plant Sale

by Amy on December 29, 2008

I’ve been thinking about replaning the garden at our front walkway.  It’s become a wild assortment of perennials, and although I usually tuck a few annuals in there, it’s really more unwieldy than I’d like.  I’m feeling the urge to rip everything out and start fresh.

The front garden, autumn 2007.

The trouble with this plan is, I simply can’t bring myself to throw plants away, and I don’t want to move all of them into the back yard.  I was thinking of dividing a whole lot of them up and having a little plant sale on the driveway in mid-spring.  My neighbours usually have a street-wide yard sale, and I think that would be a great time to find new homes for my perennial babies.

I’ll need lots of little pots, which I have out in the shed, as well as some tags for labeling the plants.  I’ll need to put some signs out on the main street near our home to bring prospective buyers by the house.

What else am I missing?

I think that selling your divisions is an awesome idea. Now I’m wondering how I can pull off a garage sale and sell seedlings too :)

Great idea! Good luck with your sale.
In my city, I would technically need to purchase a permit from the City for selling plants for the weekend. Or I could simply plead ignorance if the police came to see my permit. Sometimes it’s easier to pay for permission than for forgiveness.

I’ve freecycled plants before, an option of they don’t all sell. I usually ask the person to come with empty pot and dig it out themselves.. sooo much less work than a plant sale. An idea.

I have had many great plant sales!
A couple of things help up the sales…

1 a photo album of your plants in bloom ( or at least photos from magazines etc)
2. have a shovel handy and take the customer right out to the garden to “pick just the right one for you”.. they LOVE this!

My last plant sale paid for some (not all ) new kitchen cabinetry
The sale the previous year paid for a mission trip.

LEt me know..
Oh and start savin butter dishes, milk bottles .. you name it.. for pots.

The only problem with that is that the plants that people want are the ones you don’t really want to divide.

I have a huge Hosta bed with about 20 varieties as well as 7-8 varieties of poppies. These are NOT the plants I want to part with but the ones everyone wants.

Another small plant that I really want to spread and grow is a lovely yellow evening primrose. People stop by all the time asking for a piece of it. It is so slow growing and can go in so many empty spots in my gardens that I have to say no.

Bottom line, they think all I want to get rid of is the “yucky stuff”.
