The evolution of the garden.

by Amy on August 22, 2008

Our back yard and gardens have changed so much over the last few years.

This is a photograph I took out of our bedroom window the first summer I lived with Graham in our house.  I was trying out square foot gardening, which seems just ridiculous in retrospect, seeing as there was so much space!  I was used to small-space gardening, though, so I guess I was sticking with my comfort zone.

This is the garden the following year, when we abandoned the square foot gardens and made a longer bed, filled with vegetables and flowers.

In 2007 we doubled the size of the vegetable garden, and moved the perennial flowers out into their own bed along the other fence.

Here’s the same shot of the yard this year.  It’s so interesting to see how the space has evolved over the last four gardening seasons!

It is fun to see the transitions. Thank you for sharing this series. That… purple tree(?) sure grew fast!

Amy – I love before and after shots that illustrate the change in a garden. Great pictures!

Quite interesting indeed. What was the logic behind the switch from a raised bed to tilling up the dirt?

@Lori, you’re right, that purple tree (a red maple) sure has grown…every year Graham tells me, “That tree’s getting bigger,” and I nod and smile. But looking at these photos has made me realize just how much it actually HAS grown!

@Randy, the raised beds were only 3′ x 3′ and it eventually just seemed silly to have all that space, and limit the growing area to the smaller beds. We grow much more food now.

It’s interesting to see the progress of your garden from year to year. We bought this house last summer, and just worked on the front yard and a smidge of one side this year. Next summer, it’s onto the backyard. No vegetables this year, but I did manage a few herb pots. Baby steps.
