Green Thumb Sunday: Agapanthus

by Amy on July 27, 2008

In California, Agapanthus seems to be one of the most commonly grown flowers, a perennial plant that is native to South Africa. The purple blooms sit atop tall stems, although there are some varieties that are smaller.

I went for a little walk around Palo Alto on Tuesday this week, while I was visiting a friend. I especially love to look for plants growing in new places that simply don’t or can’t grow where I live. Agapanthus is one of those plants.

They seemed to be almost as common as hostas are here in Ontario.

Each bloom is comprised of man smaller, lily-shaped flowers. They are usually purple, although I did see some white varieties, too.

We can grow agapanthus on every corner, but we can’t grow hostas at all!

Agapanthus is indeed common in California! Every time I go visit my brother in Santa Cruz, I see hundreds of these scattered throughout the city. I have often wondered if they are volunteer or if they are planted by the homeowners.
