Cyndi’s Greenhouse: A Photo Tour

by Amy on June 10, 2008

A couple of weekends ago Graham and I drove out to Rice Lake, about forty minutes northeast of where we live. Graham likes to go fishing and I bring a book to read, or poke around looking at plants and birds. In fact, we’re heading back there for a week’s vacation at the end of the month.

As is our habit, we were exploring some of the back roads on the way home and came across this sign in the hamlet of Garden Hill.

We turned down the drive and took a rambling road back through the woods, to an area that had been a tobacco farm years ago. Cyndi’s Greenhouse is located on a family farm, and the place is incredibly charming. The detail that stood out to me was the amazing vegetable garden that was planted right in the concrete foundation of an old greenhouse.

There were two greenhouses on site, one of which was used for growing from seed, and the other seemed to be more of a holding place. The annuals grown there were in such wonderful condition, and Graham and I took note of the setup of the place. The zinnias in particular were striking.

There were all kinds of annuals available, all grown in 4″ pots or larger.

Everything looked very healthy.

Inside the other greenhouse there were all kinds of annuals, perennials and vegetables available for purchase.

I was happy to see that there were heirloom tomatoes, too, including my favourite variety, Mortgage Lifter.

These guys watched as we wandered around from across the lane.

Directions:

Cyndi’s Greenhouse is located at 8586 Dean’s Hill Road, in Garden Hill (905-797-3127). To get there, take Durham Rd. 9 to Dean’s Hill Road, then turn north. Follow the long, rambling road up to the greenhouse.

Details:

Cyndi’s Greenhouse is open Monday to Friday, 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. and Saturdays, Sundays and holidays 9 a.m. to 6 p.m.

Wednesday is customer appreciation day, when plant shoppers save 10% on purchases over $50.00. All plants are grown in pots 4″ or larger.

Cyndi’s Greenhouse can be found at the Port Hope Farmer’s Market on Saturday mornings, and the Courtice Flea Market on Sundays.

What a lovely place to discover. If the price of gas wasn’t so expensive, we would take a drive out that way too.

What a great find – every looks so healthy in your photos. I had to resist buying several plants this year that I really wanted, but just looked far too leggy and unhealthy to take home with me.
