This past Saturday, the Bowmanville Museum and Archives held its Heritage Plant Sale.
It was a modest little sale, featuring pots of daylilies, dug from the gardens on site, a few small tomato and pepper plants grown and provided by the Cottage Gardener, and a selection of tropical houseplants. All were displayed tidily on the grand porch of the house, which was built originally in 1847. Can’t you imagine having tea on this porch?
Although I didn’t purchase anything at the sale, the nicest part of attending this event was the short little walk Kelly and I took around the grounds of the home.
We discovered an old-fashioned greenhouse on the south side of the house, surrounded by mature lilac trees in full bloom.
The potting shed was tucked in behind the house.
A sign on the side of the potting shed indicates there was once a greenhouse on the south side of the structure.
Discoveries of historical landmarks and lovely properties like these are what make it worthwhile to attend gardening events in this community. What have you discovered in yours?
