Oshawa Garden Club Annual Plant Sale

On Saturday morning I got my act together in record time and headed out to Oshawa for the Oshawa Garden Club’s annual plant sale. I heard about the sale at one of our monthly COG meetings, and decided that I’d much rather support local garden clubs and associations when buying perennials than larger companies (although I do love the Loblaws garden centres).

Plant sale

The plant sale started at 9:30. I arrived at about 9:40 and the place was JAMMED. Fernhill Blvd. was lined with cars, and gardeners of all ages, men and women, with that plant-hungry look in their eyes, were swarming, stacking their boxes and plant trays with $2 and $5 perennials.

There weren’t very many plants priced at $2. When you think about it, $5 isn’t the greatest deal for a 5″ potted perennial, but when you consider the fact the plants were grown locally, and the funds raised will benefit a local garden club, then I think the price is worth it. I got away spending just $32 for seven plants.

Here's what I bought.
(Clockwise, from bottom left: Sweet Woodruff, Showy Stonecrop (’variegata’), Lungwort “David Ward”, Bee Balm “Cambridge Scarlet”, Oriental Poppy “Alba”, Phlox “Becky Towe”, Geranium “Okey Dokey”.)

I’m most excited about the lungwort, which has the prettiest apricot coloured flowers, setting it apart from most lungworts, which have purple-blue flowers. The Okey Dokey geranium is pretty, too, with its dark purple leaves.

This sale was good, but there were no annuals or vegetable plants available for purchase, unfortunately. The venue for the sale wasn’t the greatest, either, as the room was quite dark, and got crowded out easily. It would have been lovely to have the sale outdoors in the park, instead of inside the park’s clubhouse, but I suspect traffic control would have been an issue.

I’ll definitely attend this event again. Now that the herb fair I usually attend has been cancelled, this event could become its annual replacement.

What a great selection of plants. My parents recently gave me sweet woodruff. I’m hoping it thrives in the dry shade on the side of my house (apparently the only truly shady spot).

Amy’s last blog post..You Rotten Rodent!
