The last patch of snow has melted away from my vegetable garden. Here it is, in all of its early spring, messy glory. I can see I will need to do some edging to keep the grass in check, and dig in or remove the organic material that didn’t break down over the winter.
I got outside yesterday to poke around the yard and see what’s happening. Although most of the snow has melted, the ground is now very wet and spongy and will probably take a couple of weeks to dry enough to allow for spring sowing. I’m wondering if my row greenhouse would help speed things up if I set it up early? It gets very warm inside and that might help the ground to dry out.
Last fall, on a freakishly warm October day I planted tulip and grape hyacinth bulbs. The tulips are emerging from the soil, even poking through the snow in some places. Irises and daylilies are also making a valiant effort!
This morning we had a heavy frost, so everything is nearly frozen again…it will be so nice when I can have my morning coffee on the back deck, instead of here in front of the computer.

What do you do for edging? I put in a veggie bed last year along my south fence.. and the grass has started to invade it again. I’ve dug the grass out, but I’m wondering if I should put in some sort of physical garden edge, what do you think?
Oh beautiful dirt. Look at it, and barely alive grass glorious! The good thing about this time of year, besides the lack of snow for lucky people like you, is the lack of most weeds and the dandelions are easy to spot – they are the only weeds still alive (at least that’s what it’s like in my garden).
I’m looking forward to sitting outside in the morning with my coffee too. Still too cold – it was -6C when we got up today
Finally, dirt! OOPS! I mean soil.
Beautiful, beautiful.
What an awesome sight..to have so much free space to plant veggies! I am green with envy. All mine have to be packed into every available square foot! Look forward to visiting your site again for an update.
I have dug a narrow trench around my beds to stop the grass creeping across, it seems to work ok.
Looking forward to seeing what veggies your growing..
