Your lawn: It’s on the rebound.

by Amy on July 4, 2007

I can almost hear the grass sighing with relief as the rain falls on it outside today. We haven’t had any rain for a few weeks, now. We watered the grass a little bit with the sprinkler, but then decided that this is just what grass does…it goes dormant in the hottest, driest part of summer, and then bounces back again when the weather cools or there is enough rain to keep it green. We wanted to do our part to conserve water in our community.

I went outside this morning to do my usual poke around to see what’s blooming or growing after I let Farley out, and the grass around our deck in particular, looks as though the town fair took place in that spot recently. It’s trampled, it’s brown, it’s dead. It’s sad.

Here is a photo I took at the end of July last summer. See how lush and green and ALIVE the grass is?

Here is a photo I took last week of the same area.

It’s not that big a deal to have brown grass, really. It will come back again. I think there’s a lot of confusion over this. We see our friends and neighbours using so much water to water their lawns all summer long. They must think that it’s dead rather than just dormant. These days we just can’t afford to use up our water supply early in the summer. And when I say “we” I don’t mean my family. I mean society. Everyone. So just relax. Your grass will green up again when it’s ready.

Wow, that is a transformation. My garden is about the same as before because the weeds that populate my lawn seem to be drought tolerant ;-)

Yeah, for some reason those damn weeds are always green…
