Yesterday somehow I managed to come home with a flat of vegetable transplants in the trunk. They just magically appeared, honest! Okay, that’s not true…I stopped at Loblaws on my way home specifically to see if they had any deals on veggies since I underestimated the size of the community plot and want to fill it as much as possible.
I ended up with a few things for my back yard plot: leeks, sugar baby watermelon and brussel sprouts. I’ve never grown any of these before.
For the community plot, I picked up 8 each of Black Beauty eggplant, Rosa Blanca eggplant, Thai chili peppers and long cayenne peppers, as well as one pack of honeydew melons, which I have also yet to try out. Of course I can’t plant any of this until I get the massive weeding effort finished.
I got this flat of veggies for just $12 so if I have an overabundance of produce later in the summer I’ll just have to give lots away or else get creative with preserving as much as possible for the winter. (Chili sauce? Salsa?) We really did enjoy having garden tomatoes to eat long after the plants had finished for the year.
