Farm-fresh lettuce, minus the farm.

by Amy on May 27, 2007

I started four rows of greens in mid- to late-April. Here’s how they look, about four weeks later.

On the bottom is Black-seeded Simpson lettuce, the middle row is arugula and the top row is Rouge d’Hiver lettuce. Not pictured are the shinguku greens. Not sure if I spelled that right. It’s a tricky one.

I went outside this afternoon and picked a handful of each to eat with our lasagna this evening. Here is our future salad:

Lettuce is very easy to grow, and I like to sow the seed thickly so it grows in bunches and chokes out weeds. It looks so pretty in rows like this, especially when the rabbits haven’t eaten it all. I’m certain the greenhouse saved these greens.

Looks great – I love the idea of having a fresh salad available on hand in the garden.

Katie: Thanks, me too. Unfortunately the arugula has already begun to bolt. I was going to give some to my co-workers.
