About a year ago I went to Richter’s and managed to bring home an impressive number of plants. Although I have been there once this season, it was to attend a free workshop and to my astonishment, I managed to leave the place without purchasing a thing.
As a wedding shower gift last year, I received a $50 gift certificate for Richter’s (you’d think they were paying me to write about them, the way I go on…I know, it’s sickening). I usually buy several of their plants when I attend the annual Harbourfront Herb Fair (this year it’s on June 3), but I’m not sure if they’ll be able to accept a gift certificate that day. To make full use of my “free plants”, I’ll have to head over to Goodwood again.
So far there are four plants on my wish list:
- Bay Laurel. This won’t overwinter outside, but our south-facing windows have proven to me that I can overwinter many plants with success indoors.
- Tuscan Blue Rosemary. Usually I buy a very generic variety of rosemary. I never bother to bring it indoors, and have just sort of accepted the fact that this will be a one-shot plant every summer. This particular variety was recommended at the workshop I attended. If I like it enough, maybe I’ll try to overwinter it.
- Purple Bush Basil. I saw this and fell in love. It has beautiful, tiny, purple leaves and will look so pretty in a container on our deck. I’m not terribly concerned with using it to cook with…this will mostly be an ornamental.
- Fernleaf Dill. I’m hoping to make pickles this year, but I don’t expect that I’ll grow enough dill. I’ll probably pick some up at a local farmer’s market. This variety of dill was very pretty, not very tall, and looked like it would be very tasty grilled with fish, or made into a summery dip.
That adds up to about $16…I have a feeling I won’t have any trouble spending the other $34. I’ll be sure to post photos of this year’s haul when I bring it home.

Richter’s sells ladybugs!!! I also recommend their scented geraniums seeds… there’s a wide variety of different ones in the packet and they are easy to grow.
.. also maybe Farley wants some catnip???
