Beginner greenhouse growing.

by Amy on April 21, 2007

Awhile back I went to Lee Valley for the first time, and one of the things I picked up there was a greenhouse of sorts. It’s called a couple of different things: cold frame, greenhouse, row cover…regardless of its name, it’s in my back yard and heating up the soil nicely.

We put it together last night (Graham said, “This thing is huge…it’s agricultural!”), and today I planted 5 little rows of greens inside: Shungiku greens, Raddichio, Rouge d’Hiver lettuce, Black-seeded Simpson lettuce and Arugala.

It’s very warm inside so the two ends are opened up to allow for enough air circulation. I also place three potted perennials inside in hopes they’ll come back to life quickly. This will provide a means for experimenting a lot this spring, because I’m not sure if I have to stick to cool-weather crops or if I can get away with some other vegetables inside. Thoughts?

What a great greenhouse for your garden. Just think of all the veggies and plants that will have a head start on growing. It will be interesting to see how your experimenting works.

I live near Winnipeg which has very cold winters, and I got a small greenhouse last year. I found that you could grow all kinds of different plants inside, cold weather and warm weather. I did learn one lesson, which was don’t forget to open up for ventilation on really hot days or you’ll fry your plants which I did, lol.
