I finally got out to Lee Valley in Scarborough today. What I intended to leave with was a heat mat, but I had a feeling a few other things would catch my eye. I ended up scoring the heat mat, some copper plant tags, a bottle of Wegener’s Liquid Organic-based Fertilizer and a portable greenhouse thing that is kind of like a floating row-cover that I can’t wait to set up and use outside. This means I might be able to get some lettuce and cool weather crops going sooner rather than later. Will this give the plants a fighting chance against the killer rabbits? Only time will tell.

I didn’t buy the Pro-Mix there, but thought I’d leave it in the photo to show you what I use for starting seeds.
I’m intrigued by this stuff. Its components are derived from “oceanic bone meal, oceanic blood meal, sugar beet extract, molybdate sulphate, and colbalt sulphate”. I will be using it, along with compost and “barn yard tea” in my garden this summer. The barn yard tea is neat, but you are supposed to let it steep overnight, so I haven’t used it as much.
The other day Graham’s mum was by and she offered Graham some lawn fertilizer, but he told her we’re trying not to use chemicals in the yard. I was very happy to have him on board with the organic stuff. We’re learning about nematodes, since we have terrible grubs in our back lawn. This place is a Miracle-Gro-Free-Zone!
We stopped by the community garden plot the other day, and a couple of plots have been tilled, mushroom compost all worked in. Our soil looks like it needs to be amended with some mushroom compost, too, and a healthy crop of weeds have already invaded. It was encouraging to see that other gardeners have already begun to work in their plots.

Oh man don’t get me started on my community garden. They are all… we’ll resolve the questions in late April! Ummmm I need to know what’s up right about now people.
I use the Wegners on my indoor plants.
Dang I heard about a rabbit-proofing tip the other day and thought to tell you… and now I completely forget what it was.
