It’s about time I got serious about deciding what edibles I’m going to grow in my two vegetable plots this summer. One plot is the community plot we’re renting and the other is our back yard. Since there have already been rabbit-sightings, I’m counting on not being able to leave tender shoots unsupervised in the back yard. The community plot at least has a chain link fence around it, giving things a fighting chance. It’s so ironic that I have to resort to container gardening in a yard that is larger than any I’ve lived in, ever.
By now I usually have a flat of seeds started. Instead, I have a few purple basils, a few cinnamon basils and a few daturas, which only yesterday narrowly escaped an early death by drying out.

Last year’s first batch, photo taken April 9.

2005 seeds, photo taken March 1.
The definites for this year:
Mortgage Lifter tomato
Paul Robeson tomato
Currant tomato (not from seed, though, I’ll pick one of these up at the Herb Fair in June)
Amana Orange tomato
Green Zebra tomato
Amaranth “Red Stripe” (ornamental & edible)
Navy Beans
Purple Queen Bush Beans or Royal Burgundy Bush Beans
Cabbage, Early Copenhagen Market
Cucumber, “Straight 8”
Edamame
Eggplant
Jarrahdale Pumpkin
Shungiku Greens
Grey Zucchini
Long Island Cheese Squash
Chocolate Beauty Pepper
Fish Pepper
Muscade de Provence Squash
Marconi Pepper
Now I just have to figure out what is going to go in which plot and what will have to go in containers on the deck, and how the heck I’m going to maintain it all.

Nice idea! Good luck with your project. I’m doing the same thing, only on a MUCH smaller scale. Do you use fertilizer? If so, what kind?

Just compost! Nothing chemical. For container plants I use compost tea. Insecticidal soap for bugs.
