I finally broke down last Monday and started a few seeds. I like to use peat pellets. This year I bought a kind that is slightly smaller than usual, which for some reason I kind of like (81 for $5.99). I have found in the past that the fine mesh that holds the expanded pellet together has possibly limited the growth of roots when planted out directly, so I usually remove the mesh when I pot the seedling up.
I am trying to hold off on starting anything else for a few weeks because I’ve had good success with my plants in the basement before and before I know it, I’m running out of space. When it comes time to harden the plants off, it’s a lot of work to cart them upstairs to the porch, and back down again. Also, I’m planning on picking up a heat mat at Lee Valley for the peppers I’m going to grow. Oh, and there is still a Seedy Saturday in Toronto to attend, as well as the seed exchange round robin package to rifle through.
So, to satisfy my need for seed:
8 begonias
4 purple basil
4 cinnamon basil
4 green-headed coneflower
4 datura
Not a lot of sprouting action yet but the purple basil is in the lead. Its little seed leaves have yet to emerge but I can see the root emerging from the seed.

Hi,
I just came across your blog (very nice btw) and noticed you had my blog linked in your side bar. If I had known you had me linked I would have returned the favor. Anyway I’m going to add you to my blog roll. Thanks for the link.
