I realized this morning that I hadn’t uploaded very many photos from my gardens in Toronto, so I uploaded a whole bunch.
Looking over them I feel very nostalgic for that 2004 garden…it’s where I first started gardening seriously. I spent some time working at a garden centre, where I learned a lot. I spent a lot of happy hours digging in that little 4 x 10 plot, lots of trial and error went on, and I was very proud of the little space I developed into something pretty and green.

My vegetable garden in Toronto.
In some ways I like things about that tiny yard and garden even better than the huge pie-shaped lot we have here in Bowmanville, I think because it forced me to make the most of the space I had. Mostly I’m very grateful for the space we have for gardening now, and I have a lot of plans to expand the perennial and vegetable gardens this year. There is something charming about small-space gardening, though. So I think what I tend to do in our large garden is to create multiple areas with a small-space feel.

Your small-space gardening experience reminded me of my own experience years ago. Enjoyed your gardening photos. What wonderful colours and diversity you achieved in that space.
What a lovely garden. I’m jealous! It’s amazing how a small space can produce so much. Thanks for sharing this photo!
Thanks to you both for your thoughtful comments. It’s amazing what can be done in a small space if you try to take advantage of the vertical space you have!
You’re right!
I have a book about books, and how even the smallest apartment has space for bookshelves. It has great photos of books stored in cramped spaces vertically, like your idea of gardening.
You're so lucky! Here in Australia we are no longer allowed to have vegetable gardens because we are so short of water. Only yesterday a person was executed for putting water in his birdbath. The poor fellow, in his 80s found the birds were a great delight in his twilight years, but no, he broke the rules and paid dearly.
