Saving Tomato Seeds

by Amy on October 9, 2006

Today I harvested some thyme and hung it up in the basement along with the sage and mint that are now ready to be processed. I also scooped seeds from five varieties of tomatoes: Costoluto Genovese, Persimmon, Purple Prince, Cherokee Purple and Amana Orange. Even if I don’t end up growing these varieties again, at least I can trade the seeds for something new. The last few years I’ve been experimenting with a lot of different varieties, but next year I’m going to focus my efforts on growing more plants of fewer varieties, which will make canning easier. I will definitely grow Mortgage Lifter and Purple Prince again next year.

What else is going on in the garden:

Yesterday I plucked the leaves from one of my basil plants and have yet to convert all of the leaves into pesto. I ran out of olive oil. Must remember to pick some up this week and finish the preservation frenzy. There are still three big bushes left. Better get one of those Costco-sized VATS of olive oil.

I clipped back all the catnip, cringing as hundreds of seeds hit the ground. I have really let this get out of control. Sigh.

There are a lot of scotch bonnet peppers ready but I don’t know what I’m going to do with them yet. So I’m leaving the little scorchers out there until I have latexed hands ready to chop them up. Hot sauce, anyone?

Speaking of trading…

Would you be interested in trading some of your Costoluto Genovese & Persimmon tomato seeds?

Let me know.
