The Bunny’s Back

by Amy on April 27, 2006

It’s still pretty cool out in the morning these days. Daily high temps are around 12 or 13 degrees.

(This photo of the bunny was taken last summer.)

This morning as I waited for the coffee to brew I stood at the dining room window, watching Mazda find a spot to do her business in the grass (which, I noticed, is very long already). Suddenly, I noticed the bunny in the new bed. He blended right in with the soil, and had sort of flattened himself out so the dog wouldn’t see him. It was like one of those puzzles from Highlights magazine, where you find the rabbit in the garden. Anyway, that rabbit didn’t so much as twitch its nose until Mazda had been out of sight for several minutes. Then it sat up and hopped over to nibble on a hollyhock leaf. At which point I opened the window and made enough noise to scare it away. It hopped back to the raspberry patch.

I wonder if I should feed this critter? He’s eaten the tops off of several of my Asiatic Lilies as they’ve emerged. He seems to like any plant that’s a member of the onion family…

LOL, you are already feeding it! I don’t think it needs any more encouragement, unless you are willing to give up your entire harvest. I know they’re cute, but they are ravenous–all the time.

–From someone who knows firsthand what a bunny can do in the garden. : )

P.S. I linked here from the comment you left on my blog, In My Kitchen Garden. Looking forward to reading more of your posts. And I love your baby raised beds!

Oh thanks! It didn’t eat much last year, just the tops of a few Bulls’ Blood beets. Not enough to make a dent, really…

My theory was that if I fed it rabbit food it might stay away from the plants. What a fool I am! (Where there’s one rabbit there’s bound to be a bunch more…)
