Today was the first official “get out in the yard” day of the year. Graham wanted to get some of the garage tidied up and organized. Before that, though, we got out the table & chairs for the deck, and re-arranged the deck, making it suitable for sitting out.
I threw some lettuce & radish seeds in the ground, and edged the little beds that surround the deck. A lot of grass had crept into them.
There isn’t a whole lot of big work that needs to be done, but of course we are going to take on another project this year, making a new vegetable garden. The plan is the take out the raised beds that were built last spring (the wood can be used to build something else), and cut around that whole area, fill it with triple mix, and whamo, a new vegetable/perennial garden. It will connect with the perennial bed that has the old ladder in it. We’ll have to rent a roto-tiller, which has Graham excited.
I started a second batch of seeds today, including four more varieties of tomato (Box Car Willie, Purple Calabash, Purple Prince and Mortgage Lifter, all heirlooms). I already have Cherry, Oxheart and Charlie Red Stakers on the go. I’ll have too many, so I’m thinking I’ll give them away at work or sell them and donate the proceeds to our charities.
Last year our first real day out in the yard was about a week later.
