I’m not talking about garden neglect, necessarily, but garden weblog neglect.
My interest in the garden petered out a bit at the end of this last summer. Not sure why.
The biggest development at the season’s end were the new shelves Graham put up in the garage for me to store my pots and gardening tools for the winter. I ended up outside digging up my cannas when the ground was near-frozen. Hopefully they’ll be okay this spring. We ate our last window-ripened, homegrown tomato in late November. The autumn was pretty mild.
I must say, the little dogwood out back looks lovely with its red branches cast against the white snow.
As an engagement gift, Graham’s mum gave me a really cool grapevine chair for the garden. For now it’s on the front porch and when we get our Christmas tree next weekend, I’ll use the trimmings of pine or spruce to adorn the chair and the birdfeeders. My Aunt Patsy decorated her birdfeeders and they look so festive!
I have three poinsettias in the house. One is very large and red, which I bought at Costco. It’s sprayed with gold glitter, but not overdone. My Mom brought me a white one in November and yesterday my cousin Alli brought me one when we met up with our other cousin, Nat, for lunch. They look really pretty clustered near the bottom of the stairs. What I’d really love, though, is a holly bush for this time of year. Sheridan Nursery had a variegated one in a pot for $15. Seemed a little steep to me. Maybe they’ll go on sale closer to Christmas (or afterward).
My next plant-related purchase will come in the early summer next year, when I pick up a lot of flowering annuals to pot up for centrepieces for our wedding reception. I’m thinking of the creamy lime nicotiana combined with some trailing ivy.

Lime nicotiana rocks. It gets tall though… maybe there’s a short version somewhere? I can’t get enough nicotiana.–>
