The best time to shop for the garden around here is mid-July, when Loblaws puts its stock on clearance. All of the perennials that were left were down to 50% off on Saturday. I had fun picking out some of the goodies that were left hiding among the near-dead.
I got away with just 12 (!):
- Lunaria annua
- Digitalis parviflora
- Digitalis purpurea “Apricot Beauty”
- Agastache foeniculum “Golden Jubilee”
- Tricyrtis “Miyazaki”
- Hedera helix “Ivalace”
- Echinacea tennesseensis “Rocky Top Hybrids”
- Campanula punctata “Cherry Bells”
- Penstemon barbatus “Coccineus”
- Baptisia australis
- Athyrium niponicum “Pictum”
- Dryopteris filix-mas “Undulata Robusta”
Phew! My list of perennials grows long. I planted them all this evening when it cooled down enough to stay outside for awhile. It’s exciting to think about things spreading over the years, needing to be divided, building new beds…
It’s been the hottest and driest summer anyone around here can remember. Today it was over 40 C with the humidex. There is a watering ban in Oshawa/Whitby, Courtice and Brooklin, but not in Bowmanville. I gave everything a good long drink earlier this evening.
There are three females on the winter squash vine, one of which I polinated myself. I’ve done the same with some of the cucumbers, too. It’s frustrating to see females shrivel up and drop off when they haven’t been pollinated. It’s my favourite edible plant out there at the moment. (The dill is my least favourite, as I found aphids on it tonight. It got a good blast of pyrethrin as a result.)
Time to go do a rain dance…
