We’ve had another week of hot and humid weather. It makes the people wilt but the plants are loving it. My tomatoes have all doubled in size in the last 10 days or so. Ceylon has little baby fruit on it, the rest are in bloom.
Morning glories are finally starting to send out feelers. Hope they find the jute I strung up for them to climb.
The Virginia Creeper I picked up as a bargain at Loblaws is in the ground and starting to grasp the wall.
The nasturtiums are beginning to bud. They’re looking really lovely around the edge of the deck. That’s a little, low-lying garden area that I’ve really, unexpectedly grown to love.
The bull’s blood beet tops are looking terrific and taste amazing in a salad (we’ve got more lettuce than we know what to do with).
The Kentucky Wonder beans took their time but have finally climbed about halfway up the trellis I put up for them.
The mint is of course, going crazy, along with the catnip. I think the catnip is going to flower soon.
All of the basil is getting bushier. I’ve had to pinch out some flowering action.
There are peas dangling from the vine, now. The blooms on that plant are all white, and very delicate and pretty.
The new rocket pumpkin (thanks ShoMo!) has flowered a couple of male blooms. Same with the winter squash from Sakura, which is looking spectacular in the centre of one of the raised boxes.
The cilantro had some weird infestation so I cut it back dramatically and the bugs haven’t returned since. I think they were attracted to some kind of nectar or something in the stem of the flower stalks, which is what I cut off.
The peppers have been a little slower than I expected but so far there is one jalapeno and one bell pepper out there. More buds on those plants promise more fruit later this summer.
The clematis is looking lovely. The flowers are less showy than last year, but there are more of them, both effects resulting from the move from Toronto, I suspect.
The sunflowers are very lacy now, thanks, I suspect, to slugs. We’ll be setting some beer traps this weekend.
In the front of the house, the cannas are taking off, sending up more shoots. The hostas are all beginning to bloom as well. The astilbe has several buds on it. The potted plants on the front porch (two rex begonias, scented geraniums) are all doing fantastic. The scented geraniums (filbert and apple) are both blooming.
I’ve been getting so much enjoyment out of the garden this year. We are having a load of mulch delivered on the weekend for the flower beds.
