I went shopping for plants today with Heather. Not that I needed any. Well, maybe the annuals, but as you know, I’ve got a lot of perennials from Mom and Margaret. The few I did buy were repeat purchases for me. I had bought some of these guys for my garden in Toronto but they either didn’t come back this year or weren’t growing yet when I did my big heist out of there.
In total I spent about $45 and I think I did really well.
Here’s what I picked up:
I got begonias for the front yard and nicotiana for the back. I’m also giving hollyhocks a try since we have the full sun and lots of fence for support.
This is the May long weekend, and we’re supposed to be frost free from now on, but no way am I putting out my tomatoes just yet. Another week, I think. I didn’t pick up any peppers yet, either. The things I bought at the garden centre should be fine out now but the babies I’ve nurtured from seed will wait until the nights are a temperature higher above zero before I abandon them to the yard.

I was also longingly eyeing the begonias and nicotiana. I will weaken this weekend and buy one or both.
As for hollyhocks, I love the flowers, they are spectacular, but I am always disappointed with the lower leaves on the plants – mine get very scraggly and yellowed by the end of the season, so I would plant some nice mounding things in front of them. Mine also spread like crazy.
