Ugh, it’s supposed to snow 5 cm tonight. It’s almost May! Sigh. The few perennials given to me by Margaret are in pots, close to the side of the house, and have been watered well, so I suspect they’ll be alright. I don’t expect the pansies will suffer too much. However, I might just tuck everything inside the sliding kitchen door for the night just to be safe. At least I have the space to do this now.
Today I repotted a bunch of my houseplants. I couldn’t believe how huge the roots were on the spider plants! They were really root bound, too. I have to pay better attention to that. I put two into a big pot that now hangs in the front bathroom window. The window looks out into the street, so at least now if Graham happens to be standing in there (ahem) when the neighbours are nearby, they’ll see a plant instead of his head!
There sure are a lot of little black birds in the back yard. I don’t think they’re starlings. They’re walking around in the grass, digging for worms or seed or something else to eat.
We’ve been doing well collecting kitchen scraps for the compost bin. I set up an old coffee can on the counter and have been throwing anything compostable in there. Every day or so we have to take it out and empty it into the bin. I have to get a pitchfork so I can aerate my compost by stirring it around. I think a pitchfork would work better than a shovel.

Hi Amy – hope you didn’t get any snow… I am starting a compost in my backyard this year as well. Are you doing in-ground or in a bin? I can’t decide what would be better. The worms would help with the decomposition, but our ground is really hard to dig deep enough. Just wondering what you have had success with. (I’m in NS

Our bin is above ground. I throw worms in when I find them.
