Bonding with African Violets

by Amy on February 11, 2005

I am too antsy to get out in the garden, so I’ve turned to my indoor plants to get my gardening fix. I’ve especially been paying attention to my African Violets (AVs). I found this wonderful website through the Garden Web, that has a lot of wonderful, helpful information about propagating AV’s from leaf cuttings, taking suckers off the mama plants, etc. All stuff I had no idea about! This afternoon I started five babies from a mama that was in trouble, and repotted the mom. I put the babies in big ziplocks under my grow light in the basement. Photo to come.

P.S. I also got a Saxifraga stolonifera (“strawberry geranium“) at Home Depot last night for 87 cents. It was marked as “Santa’s Magic Carpet” and on the discount rack since it was considered by them to be a seasonal plant, in with the old, dead pointsettias, etc. I pulled off the dead leaves and it looks really nice!
