Something funny just happened…I went outside to admire the morning glory blooms on the fence. There’s a cedar tree next door and the m.g. vines have climbed way up into this tree eight or ten feet above the top of the fence. Anyway, I was looking up at the blooms in the cedar, really lovely and sort of mystical in the early morning and suddenly something dropped out of the tree, hit the top of the bird house and landed on the deck at my feet. It was a baby cucumber from my veggie patch! Some crazy squirrel was enjoying a salad for breakfast. It had all these little squirrely teeth marks on it. It was sort of comical the way it dropped seemingly out of the sky, but man, do they have to eat the cucumbers too?!
I turned to examine the vegetables after that and to my dismay, a sizeable branch had been left on the patio stones, totally torn off the green pepper plant. One of the peppers on the branch was nearly of the right size to be picked, but another wasn’t. Those animals are so RUDE! It makes me feel like I don’t even want to bother with vegetables next year and that maybe I’ll just wait until I have a house of my own someday with a big veggie patch surrounded by a FENCE!
Yesterday I picked a beautiful bonny best tomato, the first ripe one this year but of course it was covered in evidence a raccoon had enjoyed it first. It’s so disheartening.
