June

Yesterday was my last day at Angelo’s…sort of. I will be working every other Sunday there this summer. I was sad to leave it entirely, so when Stella offered me some weekend work I gladly took her up on it. It is a beautiful place with great girls to work with (and relate to about gardening) so it will be fun to spend a little time there sporadically over the coming months. I’ve added a new “Angelo’s” photo album (see left).

As a parting gift Stella let me take home the hosta I had picked out to purchase yesterday, Sum and Substance. I have wanted one for quite awhile now and since Mom gave me a half-barrel, I have a place for it! I planted it in the barrel this morning (after a trip to Loblaw’s for more dirt) and I have to say that it looks beautiful in the shady corner of the deck. I’m going to put a couple of other little hostas in with it and it will be a hosta barrel (thank you Kim for the suggestion).

Mom gave me a little campanula as a thank you gift for coming to help her put together her new wardrobe on Saturday. I put that down in the bed by the sidewalk.

The veggie patch is coming along nicely. I put a beefsteak tomato plant in a big planter pot and I will have to do something to keep the squirrels from digging it up…I’m just not sure how I’m going to manage that yet. The only things I want to grow that I don’t have yet are some ever-bearing strawberries and Gayla from You Grow Girl is going to bring me some blue corn seeds when we meet up next weekend at the Harbourfront Herb Fair. I’ll have to scrounge up a container to plant them in, though.

I think the back deck area is looking very nice, and once the vines start growing up the fence, it will be a really private little haven back there. So much to look forward to!
