Well, I started my new job at Angelo’s on Monday. The first day I spent most of the day outdoors or in a small greenhouse (hot, hot, hot) and did a lot of lifting (moved and priced 400 hostas!) so I am a little achy, but in a good way. Yesterday was pretty miserable outside so fortunately I was working indoors most of the day. I made a whole bunch of laminated veggie signs and priced some other items. I even helped a couple of customers out.
Other things I did:
Gave a whole bunch of lavendar plants a haircut.
Sorted and counted 6 skids of ornamental grasses, noting how many were showing growth.
Watered plants.
Moved plants.
Priced plants.
All good stuff!
The family who owns the business has a large piece of property. There are several smaller greenhouses as well as the main large, permanent greenhouse. There is a store, workshop, gravel yard, tree farm, nursery, brick yard, potting shed (the size of my two-car garage, just for pots!)…plus two full-size homes and yards. It is a beautiful plot of property and this family is very fortunate. It is obvious they’ve worked hard over the last 30 years to get where they are today.
It’s super-fun being around all kinds of beautiful plants all day long. I think the air I’m breathing there is better than the standard-issue office air I’ve been used to. I anticipate very little “take-home” stress related to this job. The other employees so far seem very enthusiastic and friendly. There’s something so satisfying about coming home at the end of the day and feeling like you really did work that day.
