Officially Spring

Had last Friday off and to my surprise and delight the weather was lovely, and perfect for getting things really cleaned up and ready to go. We have a big cedar tree next door that drops all kinds of dead foliage onto our deck, so I picked it all up. I pulled the patio furniture out of the garage, hooked up the hose…but the best part was turning over all of the dirt, mixing in some peat and top soil and making it all beautiful and ready to receive some new babies.

I put in a few lily-of-the-valley babies, and already today those nasty squirrels have dug them up! To fix it I put plastic bottle cloches over them. I hope they aren’t clever enough to get into those.

I noticed coming up were the bleeding heart (in an unfortunate location, growing out from under a fence), my butter & sugar iris, and the Canadian violets. I would like to see the shasta daisy getting a little more green, but I must be patient.

One of my favourite new spots is the centre of a maple stump down near the sidewalk. It was all rotted out in the centre, and last summer I planted some phlox inside, but this year I might try to throw the cannas in.

Today I did the garden centre rounds. Loblaws’ is open. They had lots of perennials but it’s still a bit early for many of those. It was hard not to buy anything, though! I went to a new place called Bill’s Garden Centre up near Pape and Danforth and it was really great. A little grey cat with attitude followed me around the store after I woke her from her nap in a box of elephant ear bulbs. I finished the tour at the Queen East Garden Centre, but I have been less and less impressed with the service. There is always a woman standing out front smoking and the store is quite disorganized and smells like cigarettes. I will almost definitely make Bill’s my new regular store.

I put my beans in the ground along with their teepee home. I hung up the hangers for terra cotta pots we got at Canada Blooms. I put some pansies and violas in pots on the porch and a few in the bed down near the sidewalk to add a bit of colour. I swept off the porch and swept out the garage work space. Now I’m beat! It’s time for a nap, I think.
